Lead#2 REVISED: Highway Closed
Falling trees forced CalTrans officials to close High 9 yesterday for nine hours. Heavy rain and winds throughout the night were the cause, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman provided. The highway was opened around 4pm after CalTrans crews were able to clear the trees from the road.

Much better. Since a lead should be one sentence long, just start a new paragraph after your first sentence.
ReplyDeleteRemember to proofread: Highway 9, 4 p.m.
And just use "said" instead of getting creative with attribution words like "provided." You don't want your attribution to get in the way of what was said.
